How to Tie Your Maple Bandana: A Step-by-Step Guide

So you got your Maple the Aussie bandana, yay! 🐶✨ — now let’s make sure it fits your adventure buddy just right.

Our bandanas are one-size, designed to be rolled and adjusted to fit most pups comfortably, from tiny trail trotters to big mountain explorers.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly how to:

  • Adjust the bandana size
  • Tie it securely using a square knot
  • Check that it’s safe and comfy
  • Get it ready for those summit selfies 📸

Step 1: Lay the Bandana Flat

Goal: Start with a nice, smooth base so you can roll evenly.

1.Find a clean, flat surface like a table or the floor.

2.Lay the bandana out with the printed side facing down and the point of the triangle facing toward you.

Step 2: Roll to Adjust the Size

Goal: Turn one-size into your dog’s size.

Since our bandanas are one-size, you adjust the fit by rolling the top edge.

1. Start at the long, straight edge of the triangle.

2. Roll the fabric toward the point in small folds (about 1–2 inches / 2–5 cm at a time).

3. Stop rolling when the bandana looks proportionate to your dog’s neck size:

  • Smaller dogs = roll more
  • Bigger dogs = roll less

Step 3: Place It Around Your Dog’s Neck

Goal: Position it so it looks cute and feels comfy.

1. Gently place the rolled bandana around your dog’s neck, with the point of the triangle facing down on their chest.

2. Make sure the bandana is sitting above the shoulders, not too low near the legs.

3. Hold one end of the bandana in each hand, behind your dog’s neck.

Step 4: Tie a Square Knot (Not a Granny Knot!)

Goal: Keep the bandana secure during zoomies, hikes, and head tilts.

We recommend a square knot because it’s more secure and lies flatter than a granny knot.

  1. Cross the right end over the left, then tuck it underneath and pull tight (like the first step of tying your shoes).
  2. Then cross the left end over the right, tuck it underneath again, and pull tight.
  3. Gently snug the knot so it feels secure but not tight.

This “right over left, left over right” pattern is what makes it a square knot.

Step 5: Check for Comfort and Safety

Goal: Happy, comfortable pup = happy adventure.

Once it’s tied:

  • Make sure you can fit two fingers comfortably between the bandana and your dog’s neck.
  • It should feel snug but not tight.
  • Watch your pup move around a bit — sitting, walking, shaking their head — to make sure it stays in place and doesn’t bother them.

If it seems too loose or too big:

  • Untie it, roll it a bit more, and retie.
  • Repeat until it looks and feels just right.
